Apple delaying rumored new HomePod with a screen until next year at the earliest, says Gurman

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who has a long history of accurate reporting on Apple’s product plans, has suggested that Apple is delaying its rumored new HomePod with integrated display “until next year at the earliest,” claiming that Apple is allocating its research and development spending on “more pressing projects.”

The rumored new device, which would be used to control HomeKit devices, make FaceTime calls, and more would be Apple’s take on the Meta Portal, combining the existing HomePod speaker with a 7-inch display, essentially a low-end iPad, that will feature a special UI for users to access the Home app, FaceTime, and other apps for the smart home device.

In Gurman’s weekly Power On newsletter, the reporter says Apple is looking to better allocate its research and development spending, saying that as part of the cost saving measures, some projects, including new home devices like a HomePod with a screen, have been pushed back until next year at the earliest.

Asides from the new HomePod with a screen, it isn’t clear what other products have been delayed due to the cost saving measures.
