iOS 16 to feature “significant” improvements to notifications but no major system redesign, reports Gurman

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said he expects iOS 16 to feature improvements to notifications and new health-tracking upgrades, although no major system redesign is likely, with iPadOS 16 rumored to gain a new multitasking interface and watchOS 9 gaining “major upgrades to activity and health tracking.”

In this week’s latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Gurman says iOS 16, codenamed “Sydney” will feature “some fairly significant enhancements across the board,” noting that the software will likely be “chock-full of references” to Apple’s long-rumored mix reality headset, which is widely expected to be announced either later this year or at some point in 2023.

Apple announced this week that it will host WWDC from June 6 through June 10, where the iPhone maker is expected to announce iOS 16, iPadOS 16, the next macOS update, watchOS 9, tvOS 16, and more with the main event expected to be a pre-recorded keynote, similar to Apple’s recent “Peek performance” keynote in March.

On the iOS side, I’m looking for some fairly significant enhancements across the board, including an update to notifications and new health-tracking features. I’m not expecting an end-to-end redesign of iOS’s interface, even though it hasn’t changed much since iOS 7 nearly a decade ago. But there might be a new iPadOS multitasking interface.

Gurman doesn’t speculate on any other new features expected to be included in iOS 16 or Apple’s other operating systems.
