Apple is one step closer to launching its long-rumored AR/VR headset, according to a new report from DigiTimes that claims the device has now completed Apple’s second-phase engineering validation tests.

In a new paywalled report (via MacRumors) citing information from suppliers, DigiTimes claims that Apple is now assessing the EVT 2 units to ensure the prototypes meet all specifications, signalling that the product is now a stage closer to entering mass production ahead of its official debut.

Bloomberg reported last month how Apple was reportedly facing overheating issues with prototypes of the new AR/VR headset, noting how delays at this stage could push the wearable’s launch back to later in the year or early next year.

Respected industry analysts reported last year that the headset would comprise of 15 camera modules are expected to be placed around the wearable to enable pass-through VR, which would allow the user to “see through” the device and see the real world through the visor, displayed on a screen, enabling advanced AR and “innovative biometrics.”

Concept creator Ian Zelbo has released visuals showing what Apple’s new headset will probably look like based on earlier leaked information, featuring an Apple Watch-style adjustable headband and AirPods Max reminiscent mesh cushion for comfort around the wearer’s eyes.
