Updated low-cost 9.7-inch iPad to feature no design changes, retaining Touch ID and headphone jack

Apple’s updated seventh-generation 9.7-inch low-cost iPad is expected to feature no design changes compared to the current generation model when it launches later this month, according to Japanese site Mac Otakara.

The new low-cost iPad will be a replacement to the sixth-generation device that launched last March at Apple’s education-focused media event.

Few details have been shared regarding the features coming to the updated model, although multiple reports have suggested Apple will continue to use a Touch ID fingerprint sensor rather than transitioning to Face ID like the most recent iPad Pro models, and it will also still have a headphone jack.

The 9.7-inch iPad is an entry level iPad, so it makes sense for Apple to retain Touch ID rather than introduce Face ID which would significantly increase production and component costs, thus increasing the retail price to customers.

Alongside the new 9.7-inch iPad, expected to launch at Apple’s highly rumored and yet unconfirmed media event at Apple Park on March 25th, Apple is also said to be planning to release an updated iPad mini, dubbed the iPad mini 5, again expected to feature no major design changes compared to the current generation model that originally launched in 2015.
