iOS 27.2 adds selfie age verification for Apple Accounts

Apple has added a new way for users to confirm they are adults with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2, allowing eligible users to verify their age by taking a selfie.

According to a new Apple Support document, the option may appear in supported states, countries, or regions when users create a new Apple Account, update device software, change certain safety settings, or attempt to download or purchase apps rated 18+.

The feature requires iOS 27.2 or iPadOS 27.2 or later. When prompted, users can choose the selfie option, center their face in the frame, and move their head right, left, up, and down so Apple’s age-estimation system can analyze multiple angles.

Apple says the selfie is analyzed using age-estimation models running both on the device and through Private Cloud Compute. The results are combined on the device, while the selfie itself is not accessible to Apple and is deleted once age confirmation is complete.

Once an account has been confirmed as belonging to an adult, the user can access certain restricted actions and services without needing to repeat the process each time.

Apple also offers alternative age-verification methods in supported regions, including using a credit card or government-issued ID. If a user is not an adult, some actions may require joining a Family Sharing group with an adult who has confirmed their age.

The new verification method arrives as part of iOS 27.2, which also introduces new Siri AI language support and other changes across Apple’s apps and services.
