Thinking of lining up for iPhone Duo on launch day? You might leave empty-handed

Planning to line up outside an Apple Store for iPhone Duo on launch day? There is a real chance you could wait for hours and still leave without one.
iPhone Duo officially launches on Friday, October 23, and Apple has confirmed that customers will be able to shop for the device in-store. What Apple has not confirmed, however, is how much walk-in inventory individual stores will actually have — or whether customers without a reservation will be able to buy one at all locations.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has now raised the same concern. Writing on X, Gurman said Apple has given no indication about day-one availability in its stores, warning that customers could end up waiting in line only to discover there is no stock available to buy.
The warning matters because iPhone Duo supply already appears exceptionally tight. Launch-day delivery began disappearing less than 15 minutes after pre-orders opened, while new online orders later slipped into 2027.
Gurman has also argued that Apple brought iPhone Duo to market with unusually constrained supply, saying he believes the company may not have a more reasonable level of inventory until November at the earliest. That remains his assessment rather than something Apple has confirmed, but it fits with earlier reports that production challenges nearly pushed the device’s launch back.
Apple is still preparing a major retail push for iPhone Duo. Stores are expected to have large numbers of demonstration devices so customers can try the foldable iPhone in person, but demo stock is separate from inventory available for purchase. A busy Apple Store with dozens of iPhone Duo units on display could therefore still have little or no stock available for walk-in customers.
For anyone hoping to buy iPhone Duo on October 23 without a pre-order, the safest approach may be to check Apple’s website or the Apple Store app before joining a line. Our guide to getting an iPhone Duo on launch day explains how checking nearby stores for pickup availability could give buyers a better chance than simply turning up and hoping for stock.
Apple Stores are expected to take part in the October 23 retail launch, but Apple has not promised that every store will have iPhone Duo available for walk-in purchase, nor has it disclosed how many sellable units each location will receive.
That uncertainty could make launch morning particularly frustrating. The first iPhone Duo has already generated long delivery delays and intense demand, and customers who assume lining up guarantees them a phone may be taking a bigger risk than usual this year.
