iOS 27 is a much bigger update than its familiar appearance might initially suggest, building on the Liquid Glass redesign of iOS 26 while shifting Apple’s attention toward artificial intelligence, personalization and improvements across core iPhone apps.
Where iOS 26 introduced Apple’s sweeping Liquid Glass visual language, iOS 27 refines it. Apple has focused on improving readability and contrast while adding a control that lets users adjust how transparent or tinted the interface appears, giving people more say over a design that was largely fixed a year ago.
The biggest difference, however, is Siri. iOS 27 introduces Siri AI, Apple’s rebuilt assistant powered by the latest generation of Apple Intelligence. Siri can understand personal context across messages, emails and photos, respond to what is currently displayed on screen, search the web for current information and perform more actions across apps.
Siri becomes a much bigger part of iOS
Siri AI also gets its own dedicated app, allowing conversations to be revisited rather than disappearing after an interaction. Conversation history can synchronize privately across supported Apple devices through iCloud.
That makes iOS 27 feel less like another visual redesign and more like an attempt to change how people interact with their iPhone. Apple is moving Siri from a voice assistant primarily used for individual commands toward an assistant that can understand context and work across the operating system.
There is an important catch. Siri AI and the latest Apple Intelligence features require newer hardware, so the difference between iOS 26 and iOS 27 will be considerably larger on a supported Apple Intelligence iPhone than on an older model. Apple says the new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI capabilities require iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 model or later.
Apple Intelligence spreads across more apps
iOS 27 also pushes Apple Intelligence deeper into apps people use every day. Photos adds Spatial Reframing and new editing capabilities, Safari can monitor webpages for changes such as price drops and restocks, and Messages can offer contextual suggestions for actions including creating reminders and notes.
Elsewhere, iOS 27 adds improvements across Photos, Camera, FaceTime, Messages, Passwords, Shortcuts and Apple Pay. Smaller additions include Photos keywords and star ratings, customizable slideshows, Dual Capture in FaceTime, custom AirPods EQ and improved recovery tools.
The Apple Post tracked many of these changes throughout Apple’s beta cycle, with the company increasingly focusing later betas on stability, battery optimization and performance rather than adding major new features.
iOS 27 supports the same idea of longevity
Despite its more demanding AI features, Apple has kept the core update available to older hardware. iOS 27 supports iPhone 11 and newer, meaning users do not need an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone to receive the broader operating system update.
The result is a two-tier upgrade. On older compatible iPhones, iOS 27 is primarily about refinements, new system features and app improvements. On newer models, Siri AI and the expanded Apple Intelligence experience make the jump from iOS 26 considerably more substantial.
For anyone deciding whether to update immediately, there are still sensible reasons to install on day one or wait briefly, particularly if an iPhone is relied upon for work or critical apps.
