Apple could eventually expand iPhone Duo into a broader family of foldable iPhones, potentially including a larger iPhone Duo Max alongside smaller or less expensive variants.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes Apple’s choice of the iPhone Duo name gives the company room to extend the lineup in much the same way it uses suffixes across its existing products.
Gurman suggests an iPhone Duo Max with a larger display is easy to envision, while Apple could potentially introduce an iPhone Duo SE or iPhone Duo mini further into the future. Those models could offer a less expensive foldable or adopt a smaller clamshell-style design.
The branding is notable because Apple had widely been expected to call its first foldable the iPhone Ultra. The Apple Post reported shortly before Apple’s event that the company had settled on iPhone Duo, following months of speculation surrounding the Ultra name.
Gurman argues that Duo gives Apple greater flexibility. A name such as iPhone Ultra Max or iPhone Ultra SE would sit awkwardly within Apple’s existing naming system, whereas Duo can more naturally become a family of products.
Apple has not announced additional iPhone Duo models, and Gurman’s comments should be treated as an expectation for the longer-term roadmap rather than confirmation of specific products currently scheduled for release.
The first iPhone Duo itself is already positioned as a new branch of the iPhone lineup rather than a direct replacement for iPhone 18 Pro. Apple’s first foldable combines a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch folding inner display, bringing Split View multitasking, Apple Pencil support and Touch ID to a radically different iPhone form factor.
The device starts at $1,999 in the United States, making price one of the biggest barriers to broader adoption. A future SE-style model could theoretically give Apple a way to bring foldable hardware to more customers as component costs fall, although there is currently no firm indication of when or whether such a model will appear.
Apple has followed similar expansion strategies elsewhere in its product lineup, gradually adding different sizes and price points after establishing a new category. If iPhone Duo proves successful, a larger Max model would be one of the most straightforward ways to extend the range.
For now, the first iPhone Duo will be available to pre-order on October 16 before launching October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions.
