iOS 27 arrives on Monday, and users with an iPhone that is already close to full may be wondering how much space they need before attempting to install Apple’s major software update.
There is no single amount of free storage that applies to every iPhone. The download and installation requirements can vary depending on the device, the version of iOS currently installed and the update method being used. Apple therefore does not give one universal free-space figure for every iOS 27 installation.
You can check your available storage before release day by opening Settings, selecting General and tapping iPhone Storage. The screen shows how much space is available and which apps or types of content are using the most room.
You may not need to delete everything yourself
If there is not enough room for an over-the-air update, iOS can offer to temporarily remove app data that can be downloaded again. Apple says this process does not remove personal data, and affected apps are reinstalled after the software installation has completed.
Users who would rather create space manually can offload unused apps, remove downloaded movies or music, delete large files or review photo and video storage. It is sensible to leave some breathing room rather than trying to begin a major update with an iPhone that is almost completely full.
The actual iOS update file also should not be confused with the amount of working space an iPhone may require during installation. Software updates need room to download, unpack and complete the upgrade, so the free-space requirement can be larger than the final amount of additional storage consumed by iOS itself.
What if your iPhone still doesn’t have enough space?
If clearing enough room is difficult, updating with a Mac or Windows PC can be an alternative to performing the entire process over the air. Before starting either method, Apple recommends making a backup of the iPhone.
Storage requirements are particularly worth checking ahead of Monday because iOS 27 supports devices as far back as iPhone 11, including older iPhones that may have smaller storage capacities or years of accumulated photos and apps.
