Apple reportedly planning iPhone Air 2 despite weak demand for current model

Apple is reportedly planning to release a second-generation iPhone Air despite lower-than-expected demand for the current model.
According to a leaker on Weibo, Apple is prepared to “grit its teeth and push through with at least two generations” of the iPhone Air before deciding the long-term future of the product line.
Shortly after the original iPhone Air launched, reports suggested that production had already been scaled back to what were described as “end-of-production levels,” fueling speculation that the device was not selling as well as Apple had hoped.
Apple introduced the iPhone Air in September last year alongside the iPhone 17 lineup. The device launched as Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever at just 5.6mm thick, featuring a titanium frame, second-generation Ceramic Shield, and a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display.
However, the iPhone Air lacks some of the features found on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, including a second rear camera and a larger battery.
Analysts believe those omissions may have contributed to the device’s weaker sales performance, especially given its positioning between the standard and Pro models.
Even so, Apple appears willing to give the iPhone Air more time to establish itself, with a second-generation model now expected to arrive next year.
