iPadOS 26 available from September 15

Apple will release iPadOS 26 next Monday, September 15.
The update introduces a new design, an advanced windowing system for multitasking, deeper Apple Intelligence integration, and major improvements to files, audio and video.
iPadOS 26 adopts Apple’s “Liquid Glass” look — a translucent, dynamic design that reacts in real time and focuses attention on content.
The aesthetic matches iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, unifying the look across Apple platforms. Dock, sidebars and toolbars have been refined for clarity and personalisation.
A new windowing system lets users resize and freely place app windows, tile them with gestures, and return to them in their saved state.
A menu bar offers quick access to app commands with a swipe or cursor hover. Users can also search features within the menu bar, while developers can customise it in their own apps.
Apple Intelligence is more deeply integrated. Users can now create “Genmoji” from existing emoji, add traits like hair or accessories, and select expressions.
Image Playground gains new styles such as oil painting, along with custom image generation powered by ChatGPT integration.
The Files app has been overhauled with a list view featuring resizable columns and collapsible folders. Folders can be customised with icons, colours and emoji, and dragged into the Dock.
Default apps can now be set for specific file types.
Preview comes to iPad for the first time. Users can edit PDFs and images with Apple Pencil or touch, create blank pages, fill forms with AutoFill and manage documents through Files.
The Journal app debuts on iPad. Users can add drawings, handwriting, photos, videos, audio, locations and mood tracking. A new map view shows entries by location.
Messages gains personalised conversation backgrounds using Image Playground, as well as polls, typing indicators and redesigned group details.
Users can now request and receive Apple Cash directly in Messages.
The Phone app also arrives on iPad, bringing iOS 26 features such as call screening — which collects caller details before you pick up — and Hold Assist, which waits on hold and alerts you when a live agent is available.
