Today, Apple unveiled Apple Intelligence, the cutting-edge personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This innovative system combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver incredibly useful and relevant intelligence. Integrated deeply into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple Intelligence utilizes the prowess of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and expedite everyday tasks. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new benchmark for privacy in AI, providing the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models running on dedicated Apple silicon servers.
“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”
Apple Intelligence introduces new avenues for users to refine their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various platforms, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. Whether fine-tuning class notes, perfecting a blog post, or crafting an email, Writing Tools empower users to feel more confident in their writing. The Rewrite feature allows users to choose from different versions of their text, adjusting the tone to suit the audience and task at hand. Proofread checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure, offering suggestions along with explanations for edits. Summarize condenses selected text into a digestible format, facilitating quick comprehension.
In the Mail app, managing emails is streamlined with Priority Messages, which highlights urgent emails at the top of the inbox, and message previews provide summaries without needing to open each email fully. Smart Reply offers quick response suggestions, and the app identifies questions in emails to ensure comprehensive replies.
Language understanding extends to Notifications, where Priority Notifications surface important information at the top of the stack, and summaries help users quickly grasp key details directly from the Lock Screen. Reduce Interruptions Focus minimizes distracting notifications, allowing users to stay focused on the task at hand.
In the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio, with participants automatically notified during recordings, and summaries generated post-call to aid in recalling key points.
Powered by Apple Intelligence, Image Playground introduces exciting image creation capabilities for enhanced communication and self-expression. Users can effortlessly create fun images in seconds, choosing from Animation, Illustration, or Sketch styles. Integrated into apps like Messages, Image Playground offers a seamless experience, with a dedicated app for experimentation. All image creation occurs on device, granting users unlimited freedom to explore.
In Notes, Image Playground is accessible through the Image Wand in the Apple Pencil tool palette, enriching notes with visually engaging content. Users can transform rough sketches into images and utilize context from surrounding areas to create images dynamically. Image Playground is also available in apps like Keynote, Freeform, and Pages, as well as third-party apps adopting the new API.
Users can elevate their emoji game with Genmoji, creating original expressions effortlessly. By typing a description, Genmoji instantly appears, with additional customization options available. Genmoji can be used inline in messages or shared as stickers or reactions, adding a personalized touch to communication.
Apple Intelligence enhances photo and video search with natural language capabilities, allowing users to search for specific moments effortlessly. Search in videos becomes more powerful, enabling users to pinpoint specific moments within clips. The Clean Up tool identifies and removes distracting objects from photos without altering the subject.
With Memories, users can curate personalized stories by simply describing the desired memory. Leveraging language and image understanding, Apple Intelligence selects the best photos and videos, crafts a narrative with themed chapters, and arranges them into a cohesive movie, complete with song suggestions from Apple Music.
Empowered by Apple Intelligence, Siri undergoes a transformation, becoming deeply integrated into the system experience. With enhanced language understanding, Siri offers more natural, contextually relevant, and personalized assistance. Siri maintains context across requests and supports typing input, enabling users to communicate with Siri in a manner that suits them best. The new design features an elegant glowing light around the screen edge when Siri is active.
Siri expands its capabilities, offering device support and answering a wide range of questions across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users can learn how to perform various tasks, from scheduling emails to switching between Light and Dark Mode.
Additionally, Siri gains onscreen awareness, facilitating actions related to displayed information in apps. Siri can take hundreds of new actions across apps, such as finding book recommendations or adding received addresses to contacts.
Privacy is fundamental to Apple Intelligence, with on-device processing and stringent privacy protections. Private Cloud Compute extends privacy and security into the cloud for more complex requests, leveraging Apple silicon servers. Independent experts can inspect server code, ensuring transparency and privacy. Apple Intelligence sets a new standard for privacy in AI, delivering intelligence users can trust.
Apple integrates ChatGPT access into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, enabling users to leverage its expertise seamlessly. ChatGPT powers systemwide Writing Tools and image tools, allowing users to generate content and images effortlessly. Privacy protections are built into ChatGPT, ensuring user anonymity and data security.
ChatGPT will debut later this year, powered by GPT-4o, offering free access without account creation. Subscribers can unlock additional features directly from these experiences.
