Twitter app updated, now called X with new app icon
X, formally Twitter, has updated its app for iPhone and iPad to remove the blue bird icon that’s long been its signature, with the app renamed X.
Last week, Musk said he would “bid adieu” to Twitter’s former identity and “gradually, all the birds” as part of a company-wide rebrand that introduced an “X” that is superseding the original Twitter brand.
The change is the latest change made to the platform since Elon Musk’s turbulent acquisition of Twitter last year, which has seen loosened content moderation, controversial changes to its verification system, a focus on paywalling features such as TweetDeck, and the recent introduction of rate limits, which cap how many tweets users can read.
The new X branding is being rolled out across the former Twitter website, with the @TwitterSupport, @TwitterDev and @TwitterAPI accounts being changed to @Support, @XDevelopers, and @API.
The change follows after Musk legally renamed Twitter Inc. to X Corp. in April, saying at the time Twitter would become an “everything app” called X.
