References to Apple’s long-rumored mixed-reality headset have been discovered within the new Apple Devices Preview app for Windows, with Twitter user @aaronp613 finding “Reality OS” and “xrOS” references within a new app made by Apple designed for users to back up their iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices to Windows machines.

As reported by MacRumors, both “RealityOS” and “xrOS” have been repeatedly included in reports discussing Apple’s upcoming AR/MR headset, with the names expected to relate to the operating system on which Apple’s new wearable will eventually run.

The discovery by @aaronp613 on Wednesday shows clear “RealityOS” and “xrOS” references within the new Apple Devices Preview app, with the iPhone maker likely to have accidentally left the references in the code as it prepares to finally announce its mixed reality headset later this year, potentially as soon as WWDC in June.

The app in which the references were discovered is a new app from Apple that will allow users to manage Apple devices from their Windows PC. Users will be able to backup their device, update their device’s software, and more using the application.

The rumored device will reportedly feature two ultra-high-resolution 8K displays with a “bevy” of other features, including advanced eye-tracking technology, marking Apple’s first major new product launch since the original Apple Watch in October 2014.

In 2021 saw The Information publish a sketch of the upcoming headset, claiming to have seen secret internal imagery from an unnamed source “with direct knowledge” of the development, reporting at the time that the device will offer a “sleek, curved visor attached to the face by a mesh material and swappable headbands.”

Concept creator Ian Zelbo has released visuals showing what Apple’s new headset will probably look like based on earlier leaked information, featuring an Apple Watch-style adjustable headband and an AirPods Max reminiscent mesh cushion for comfort around the wearer’s eyes.
