Apple’s cancelled ‘M2 Extreme’ Mac Pro could have cost ‘at least $10,000’

Last month, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that Apple had cancelled plans for a new ‘M2 Extreme’ Mac Pro, which was expected to have 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores.

The machine, which is said to have been cancelled in part due to challenges in producing the new high-end chip, could have cost ‘at least $10,000,’ according to Gurman, who says the product likely wouldn’t be worth the development costs, engineering resources and production bandwidth it would require to produce.

In his Power On newsletter at the time he shared that the ‘M2 Extreme’ Mac Pro has been scrapped, Gurman said “Based on Apple’s current pricing structure, an M2 Extreme version of a Mac Pro would probably cost at least $10,000 — without any other upgrades — making it an extraordinarily niche product that likely isn’t worth the development costs, engineering resources and production bandwidth it would require.”

Rather than focusing on a niche ‘M2 Extreme’ Mac Pro, Apple is now said to be focusing on releasing a new Mac Pro next year that will be powered by an M2-series chip that will focus on easy expandability for additional memory, storage and other components, expected to rely on a new-generation M2 Ultra chip.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly working on multiple new external monitors, including an update to the Pro Display XDR.
