How to make the Lock Screen darker on iPhone

If you’re asking yourself how to make your iPhone Lock Screen darker when the Always-On display is turned on, there are two options, including the ability to hide the wallpaper and/or or notifications when the Always-On display is enabled, making the screen darker and less eye-catching when the Always-On display is in an active state.

Apple’s Always-On display has been heavily compared to the displays of its Android counterparts. In most cases, users have complained that the Always-On Display isn’t dark enough when active, leaving many to criticize the display for being too bright when in standby mode.

To combat these complaints, Apple has added a new toggle to the Settings app that allows users to choose whether they want to hide wallpaper and/or notifications when the Lock Screen is left idle. When enabled, this option will only show the time and widgets on the Lock Screen.

How to make the Lock Screen darker on iPhone

  • Open the Settings app and select Display & Brightness
  • Scroll down the list until you find the Always On toggle
  • Tap the switch to disable the Wallpaper and/or Notifications

With the Always-On display enabled, the iPhone will operate with a refresh rate as low as 1 Hz with a new low-power mode, which helps preserve battery life when the device is left idle, while still showing Lock Screen information.
