Apple is switching its virtual Apple Cash debit cards to the Visa financial network, with support documents and Apple’s webpage now showing Apple Cash cards branded with the Visa logo, potentially hinting at an international expansion of the service, which has been exclusive to users in the US since its launch in 2017.
Apple Cash, formally known as Apple Pay Cash, is a peer-to-peer mobile payment system that lets Apple users request and send money between each other.
Users can send money to friends and family through Messages and by using Siri, with funds kept on the Apple Cash virtual debit card in the Wallet app to be used in-stores, online or withdrawn to the user’s bank account.
Apple has used the Discover network for Apple Cash cards since the service’s launch, however, as noted by Twitter user @Kanjo, Apple has recently updated its support documents and webpage to show Apple Cash cards branded with the Visa logo.
The Discover network is not as vast as Visa’s network, suggesting Apple may be planning an international expansion of the service in the near future.
Apple appears to be in the midst of the Visa network transition, with all new Apple Cash cards being created using Visa.
