The Information on Thursday published a new report on Apple’s long-rumored AR/VR headset, offering some new details on what to expect from the device, which could launch as soon as 2022.
According to the report, which cites an unnamed source “with direct knowledge” of the development, Apple’s new device will feature two ultra-high-resolution 8K displays with a “bevy” of other features, including advanced eye-tracking technology and the ability to pass video of the real world through the visor and display it to the user, offering a “mixed-reality effect.”
The Information, which claims to have seen secret internal imagery of the headset last year as the device entered the late prototyping stage, says it will offer a “sleek, curved visor attached to the face by a mesh material and swappable headbands,” as shown in the drawing above.
A mixed-reality headset Apple is developing will be equipped with more than a dozen cameras for tracking hand movements and showing video of the real world to people wearing it, along with ultra-high-resolution 8K displays and advanced technology for tracking eye-tracking technology, according to a person with direct knowledge of the device […] Apple has for years worked on technology that uses eye tracking to fully render only parts of the display where the user is looking. That would let the headset show lower-quality graphics in the user’s peripheral vision and reduce the device’s computing needs, according to people with knowledge of the efforts.
The rumored $3,000 price point would put the headset way above the cost of the competition, with Apple initially setting its sights on shipping around 250,000 units of the device in its first year of release, the report suggests.
