AirTags have been rumoured from Apple throughout 2019, and 2020. Although they have not seen the light of day as of yet, a reliable leaker @LOvetodream tweeted that they were ‘coming soon’ and in a series of cryptic tweets, suggesting there will be two size options.

The tweets simply stated ‘big one, small one, coming soon’, leading many to believe that this is quoting the yet unreleased AirTags, and that the rumour of two sizes could be true after all. Some former suggestions were that the Mac mini and iMac were going to be the first silicon Macs, or it could have even meant two sizes of MacBook could be the first for Apple Silicon release.

The reasoning of having two sizes could be unknown, but one theory is that a smaller tag would have a smaller battery, and bigger one having a bigger battery, which would not need to be charged as frequently. This would make the bigger one useful for bigger items like travel luggage and more. Whereas the smaller one better for smaller items like kets and more.

Although products like Tile have been around for a long time, Apple’s tags will use Ultra-Wide Band radio for extremely precise location-finding, to within inches. They will also use all iOS devices as passive trackers for lost items, greatly increasing the likelihood of a lost item being quickly located and reunited with its owner. @LOvetodream’s timings are slightly different to those that were mentioned by John Prosser, who recently suggested that AirTags have been pushed back to March 2021. Prosser however has had a better track record in the past.

We have to wait and see if the AirTags finally make their appearance at the rumoured Mac centric event in November.
