Apple has doubled the cost of upgrading the RAM on the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, with customers now being charged $200 to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB of RAM, up from $100 previously for the same spec increase.
First spotted by MacRumors over the weekend, the price increase has hit customers across the globe, with shoppers in Germany seeing the upgrade now charged at €250, up from €125, and from £100 to £200 in the United Kingdom.
The reason behind the sudden price increase is unknown, following after Apple cut the price of its high-end storage upgrades for iMac, iMac Pro, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Pro late last year.
One theory behind the sudden price increase is the impact the COVID-19 outbreak has had on Apple’s component suppliers. One possibility is that due to supply constraints, suppliers are charging extra for spec upgrades, a charge that is now being reflected to customers upgrading their new machine.
