Apple has officially launched Express Transit support to London Underground, allowing passengers of the TfL tube network to pay for their travel with Apple Pay without having to use Touch ID or Face ID authentication.
Express Transit launched with iOS 12.3 and is currently available in Beijing, Shanghai, Japan, New York City’s MTA and in Portland, Oregon on forms of transport that accept Hop Fastpass.
The Apple Post reported last week that Express Transit was working for some users in London, hinting at its imminent arrival.
When traveling on the tube, Londoners don’t need to authenticate payments with Face ID or Touch ID – with a simple tap of any supported iPhone or Apple Watch on the yellow card reader paying for travel, even if the device’s battery has died.

How to use Express Transit with Apple Pay
- Add a card in the Wallet app of your iPhone to pay for your journey
- Walk up to any transit terminal with your iPhone or Apple Watch
- Simply hold the device above the contactless card reader and the screen of your device will wake to show your transaction has been successful – your device will also vibrate
