Wemo Mini Smart Plug gains HomeKit support via software update

Wemo Mini Smart Plug - Lifestyle

Wemo is equipping more than one million Wemo Mini devices with HomeKit support through a new software update available now for users to allow them to use Siri to control their devices and what’s plugged into them through HomeKit.

The Smart Plug uses your existing home Wi-Fi network to provide wireless control of lamps, heaters, fans, and more–with no subscription or hub required. Users can simply plug the Wemo Mini Smart Plug into an electrical outlet, plug a device into the Smart Plug, and control their devices freely from around the world.

Unlike other HomeKit enabled accessories, Wemo doesn’t require users to have a separate bridge to use/connect to HomeKit as authentication is channeled through Apple’s new software authentication system introduced with iOS 11.3, allowing users to connect without chip certification.

With HomeKit support users of the Wemo Mini Smart Plug can perform a number of actions including setting schedules and timers, and controlling devices plugged-in to the Wemo Mini Smart Plug all via the Wemo App or by using Siri through HomeKit. Users can also use “Away Mode” to control lights and other electronic devices while away from the home.

We have sold more than one million Wemo Minis and with Apple’s new software authentication of HomeKit, our customers can easily integrate their Wemo devices with the Apple Home app and Siri, to enjoy the full Apple experience of home control. – Justin Doucette, senior director of product management for Wemo.
