Apple reportedly aiming to launch AirPower in September

Apple is reportedly aiming to launch AirPower, it’s highly anticipated wireless charging mat capable of charging up to three devices at once in September according to Bloomberg who claim the delayed release of the accessory is due to prototypes overheating during testing.

Since the reveal of AirPower at the launch of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X last year Apple has remained extremely secretive about the launch of the device. So far Apple is yet to share pricing, specifications, or if a fast-charging cable will be included to power the mat when charging three items at once.

The report claims that AirPower will run a basic version of iOS to manage power and complex circuitry, and communicate with the devices that are charging.

Apple didn’t say when in 2018 it would release AirPower, but engineers hoped to launch the charger by June. The aim now is to put it on sale before or in September, according to one of the people. In recent months, some Apple engineers have ramped up testing of the device by using it as their charger at the office, another person said.

AirPower was first previewed alongside the unveiling of the iPhone X in September. Users will be able to charge up to three devices at once, including their Apple Watch Series 3, compatible Apple Watch charging case, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X on the wireless charging mat, with new products expected to gain wireless charging capabilities in the future. When users have multiple devices charging at the same time AirPower will ‘communicate’ between each device and intelligently decide on how much power each device requires.
