Digitimes has reported that Apple will replace the current Touch ID setup for a new custom built fingerprint sensor for the iPhone 8. As the device is rumoured to have an edge-to-edge bezel-less display, it’s hinted that the handset will use a ‘built-in’ sensor integrated into the screen.
Apple will not be using Synaptic or Qualcomm technology this time around as they’re reportedly building their own custom variation. This new technology would likely be implemented into the “Function Area” mentioned in the past.
What’s interesting is that the mass production date isn’t rumoured to start until September. Generally Apple debuts and offers new iPhone pre-orders all in September. If this rumour does turn out to be the case, it’s possible that the iPhone 8 wouldn’t be available until October. The last time Apple released an iPhone in October was the 4s, so this would be a huge change from its previous routine. Although, the standard iPhone 7s upgrade is expected to begin production in July hinting at a September launch.
While Digitimes seems to have a fairly decent track record, the report should be taken with caution. They’ve been known to be wrong multiple times in the past.
