Sharp is reportedly set to manufacture all OLED displays for the upcoming iPhones within Foxconn’s factory

According to a new report by DigiTimes, Sharp Corporation, owned by Taiwan-based Foxconn Group, is rumoured to be creating a new OLED production line within factories in Zhengzhou City, northern China, to produce displays for devices entering assembly “sometime in 2019,” with around $864 million being spent on OLED production specifically for upcoming Apple handsets.

Sharp plans to invest JPY100 billion (US$864 million) to set up an OLED production line at Foxconn Electronics’ factory in Zhengzhou City, northern China, with production to begin in 2019, according to Japan-based Nikkei.

In September, The Apple Post reported that Apple was allegedly in talks with Sharp to provide OLED display for future iPhones, with Sharp’s CEO suggesting that only one variation of the ‘iPhone 8’ would feature an OLED display. – Currently OLED displays are only being used by Apple within the Apple Watch, and following the comments from Sharp last year, it’s possible that the technology could only be found upon higher end iPhone models.
