Apple is already preparing a second generation of its new Touch-enabled MacBook Pro lineup, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that updated models are planned for 2027 with M7 Pro and M7 Max chips and new AI-focused hardware capabilities.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple’s next high-end MacBook Pro models will continue the touchscreen direction introduced this year, while moving to the M7 Pro and M7 Max generation. The chips are expected to place a heavier emphasis on AI processing, although Bloomberg does not detail exactly what the new hardware capabilities will enable.
The timing is notable because Apple’s first Touch MacBook Pro models use M5 Pro and M5 Max rather than M6 Pro and M6 Max. Bloomberg has previously reported that Apple plans to skip those higher-end M6 variants altogether and accelerate its move to the M7 family, which is being developed with more advanced AI workloads in mind.
The current MacBook Pro with Touch and PROLED XDR was announced on October 28 with a tandem OLED display, Dynamic Island, a thinner and lighter chassis, and direct touch input for the first time on a Mac. Bloomberg’s first hands-on impressions suggest Apple has taken a deliberately conservative approach to Touch, keeping the keyboard and trackpad central to the Mac experience.
Gurman also says Apple is preparing a new entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with a standard M7 chip. That model is expected to adopt the thinner design and slimmer display bezels introduced on the new high-end machines.
There is no indication yet that the entry-level M7 model will gain the PROLED XDR display or touchscreen controls, so the report should not be read as confirmation that Touch is coming to every MacBook Pro next year. The current 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro keeps the older Liquid Retina XDR display and established chassis while sitting below the redesigned Touch models in Apple’s lineup.
If Apple follows the roadmap described by Bloomberg, 2027 could bring a more unified MacBook Pro family, with the entry-level model adopting the slimmer enclosure while the premium Touch versions move to a new generation of Apple silicon focused more heavily on AI performance.
