Early iPhone Duo owners are beginning to report damaged inner displays, with several examples showing cracks forming directly along the foldable screen’s hinge area just as Apple’s first foldable iPhone reaches customers.
The Verge reports that multiple iPhone Duo owners have shared photos and videos of damaged inner displays, with several of the affected devices showing cracking around the center fold and bright lines appearing across part of the screen.
One of the clearest reports comes from an owner in Australia, who said their iPhone Duo failed after roughly six hours of use and fewer than 20 openings. In a post shared on Reddit, the owner said they felt something beneath the display near the hinge while opening the device before hearing an audible crack as the screen split along the fold.
The owner said there were no visible marks on the inner display or external hinge that would suggest the phone had been dropped or that an object had become trapped inside. Apple initially offered an express replacement, according to the owner, before an Apple Store ultimately replaced the device with a new iPhone Duo immediately.
Other reports highlighted by The Verge appear to show broadly similar damage, including cracked inner displays concentrated around the hinge area. However, the number of known cases remains very small, and there is currently no evidence that the reports represent a widespread iPhone Duo hardware defect.
Apple had not publicly commented on the reports at the time of writing, so it is not yet clear whether the affected phones share a common cause or whether the damage is related to isolated manufacturing, assembly or component issues.
The reports will nevertheless attract attention because the flexible inner display is one of the most technically complex parts of iPhone Duo. Apple has emphasized the durability work behind the device, while also designing parts of the inner display system to be serviceable. The Apple Post previously reported that the replaceable cover layer above the foldable display can be serviced separately with AppleCare+, although the damage shown in these new reports appears to extend beyond simple wear to that surface layer.
The timing is also notable because iPhone Duo officially launched today after an unusually constrained preorder period. Apple has confirmed that Apple Stores have only limited quantities available for walk-in customers, making immediate replacements potentially more difficult if further hardware failures emerge.
For now, the reports should be treated as isolated cases rather than evidence of a broader reliability problem. More meaningful conclusions will depend on whether similar complaints continue appearing as significantly more iPhone Duo devices reach customers over the coming days and weeks.
