Apple has still not clearly said whether customers will be able to walk into an Apple Store and buy an iPhone Duo on launch day, adding another layer of uncertainty around one of the company’s most constrained product launches in years.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple has given no indication of whether there will be day-one iPhone Duo inventory available for walk-in customers at its retail stores, warning that people could end up queuing without knowing whether units will actually be available to buy.
That distinction matters because Apple has confirmed that iPhone Duo will be available from Friday, October 23 and says customers can shop for the device in-store or arrange Apple Store pickup. However, Apple has not publicly guaranteed that every store will have sellable walk-in stock on launch morning, or that customers without a reservation will be able to buy one.
Apple’s latest iPhone Duo launch information says customers shopping in-store or online can get help from Apple Specialists and can arrange pickup at a local Apple Store, but it stops short of detailing how much launch-day inventory will be available for people who simply turn up.
The uncertainty comes as iPhone Duo supply appears increasingly tight. Pre-order delivery estimates slipped beyond December within minutes of orders opening, with some U.S. configurations quickly moving into late January.
Apple had already been expected to face supply constraints. The Apple Post previously reported that Apple had been concerned iPhone Duo production problems could force the retail launch into late November before enough inventory was built to keep the October 23 date.
Gurman now believes Apple launched iPhone Duo earlier than its supply position ideally allowed, saying the company may not have a reasonable amount of inventory until November at the earliest. That would help explain why pre-order estimates deteriorated so quickly and why launch-day store stock remains such a major question.
Apple is still expected to make iPhone Duo highly visible in retail stores. Earlier reporting indicated that Apple Stores would receive substantial numbers of demonstration units and new display areas for the foldable device, even while sellable stock remained constrained.
For customers hoping to buy an iPhone Duo on October 23, the safest option will be to keep checking Apple’s online store and Apple Store app for pickup availability as launch day approaches rather than assuming walk-in inventory will be available. Store stock can change quickly as orders are canceled, collected or reallocated.
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom, with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options in star white and night sky.
