iPhone Duo pre-orders have only just opened, but delivery estimates have already stretched deep into the future, raising an obvious question: is Apple’s first foldable iPhone proving exceptionally popular, or did Apple simply have too few units ready for launch?
The most likely answer, based on what we know so far, is both.
The speed at which availability deteriorated after pre-orders opened is a strong sign that demand is substantial. Apple began taking orders at 5 a.m. PT in the United States and 1 p.m. BST in the United Kingdom on Friday, and some configurations were showing delivery estimates extending into January 2027 shortly afterwards.
That does not, however, tell us how many iPhone Duo units Apple actually sold. Apple does not disclose real-time pre-order numbers or the amount of launch inventory available for individual iPhone models, so a long shipping delay alone cannot prove that demand is at record levels.
There is plenty of evidence that supply was tight before a single customer placed an order. Reports in September suggested that production of iPhone Duo was being constrained by its new hinge and a more complex assembly process, with early estimates pointing to a much smaller first-year production run than Apple’s conventional flagship iPhones.
More recently, Apple was reported to have reacted to stronger-than-expected interest by increasing iPhone Duo supply-chain orders by around 30%. Even after that increase, reported supply for the remainder of 2026 was still expected to remain below 10 million units.
That combination matters. If Apple entered pre-orders with comparatively limited inventory and customer interest then exceeded its revised expectations, shipping estimates could move rapidly even if total iPhone Duo demand remains far below the volumes normally seen for mainstream iPhone models.
Apple itself appeared to be preparing customers for a rush. Ahead of pre-orders, the company encouraged buyers to use its “Get Ready” process to configure their iPhone Duo in advance and check out quickly once ordering opened. The Apple Store also went offline ahead of pre-orders, as it traditionally does before major product launches.
For now, the fairest conclusion is that iPhone Duo appears to be attracting strong demand, while constrained supply is amplifying how dramatic the shipping delays look. We will have a clearer picture as Apple replenishes inventory and the initial launch rush settles over the coming days and weeks.
