Apple is changing how App Tracking Transparency can be presented in the European Union, with iOS 27.2 giving developers the option to use an alternative version of the system permission prompt.
The change follows Apple’s recent agreement with EU regulators and applies to apps distributed in the European Union. Developers will still need to request permission before tracking users, but they will have another Apple-provided prompt available when doing so.
Apple confirmed the change on its developer website, saying the alternative App Tracking Transparency system prompt will become available beginning with iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2.
App Tracking Transparency was introduced to require apps to obtain permission before tracking activity across other companies’ apps and websites. The existing system prompt gives users the choice of allowing tracking or asking the app not to track.
The alternative prompt does not remove the requirement for consent. Instead, it changes the system experience developers in the EU can use when requesting that permission, as Apple continues making regional changes to iOS in response to European regulation.
The option is being introduced as part of iOS 27.2, which entered developer beta testing this week. Because the change is tied specifically to Apple’s EU arrangements, users outside the European Union will continue to see the standard App Tracking Transparency experience.
