macOS 27 Golden Gate is more than another annual Mac update. Its release marks the point where Apple’s current macOS platform becomes an Apple silicon-only affair, leaving Intel Macs behind after a transition that began six years ago.
Apple supports macOS 27 on Macs with an M1 chip or newer, including Apple silicon MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro models. The new MacBook Neo is supported too.
For Intel Mac owners, macOS Tahoe 26 is the end of the line for major operating system upgrades. Apple has said supported Intel Macs will continue receiving security updates, but they will not move forward to Golden Gate.
The timing is significant. Apple introduced its first M1 Macs in 2020 after announcing plans to transition away from Intel earlier that year. Since then, Intel compatibility has gradually become a legacy requirement rather than something shaping the future of macOS.
Dropping Intel allows Apple to build new versions of macOS around hardware it controls from end to end. That becomes particularly important as Apple puts more emphasis on on-device machine learning and Apple Intelligence, with Siri AI forming one of the biggest additions in macOS 27.
There is still a bridge to the past. macOS 27 can run Intel Mac apps on Apple silicon through Rosetta, so the end of Intel Mac operating system support does not immediately mean the end of Intel software compatibility.
For customers still using one of the final supported Intel Macs, there is no immediate reason to stop using it simply because Golden Gate has arrived. Security support continues, and macOS Tahoe remains a modern operating system. What changes today is the direction of travel: new major macOS features now belong to Apple silicon.
The result is a cleaner dividing line than Apple has had for several years. The Mac’s processor transition is no longer something happening in the background. With macOS 27, it is effectively reflected in the operating system itself.
