If you have updated your iPhone to iOS 27 and spotted an “Optimizing Search and Siri” message in Settings, there is no need to stop using your iPhone or assume something has gone wrong. The message means iOS is indexing the content on your device so Search and Siri can find and use information more effectively.
Apple says Spotlight relies on a private, local index of the data stored on your device. That index can include apps, messages, email, contacts, photos, notes, music, settings and other content. Siri can also use information from the index when responding to requests.
The indexing process normally takes place after setting up a device and following a software update or upgrade, which is why many users installing iOS 27 may encounter the message shortly after updating.
How long does Optimizing Search and Siri take?
There is no fixed completion time. Apple says indexing can take hours or even days depending on how much data is stored on the device. Your iPhone remains usable while the process takes place in the background.
The message itself explains that indexing begins with your most recent data and that longer charging sessions can help it finish faster. Apple similarly recommends leaving the device connected to power, connected to Wi-Fi and, where possible, not actively in use.
For most people, the best option is therefore simply to continue using the iPhone normally and leave it connected to a charger and Wi-Fi for an extended period, such as overnight. The “Optimizing Search and Siri” message should disappear once indexing is complete.
Indexing can temporarily place additional demands on an iPhone while it works through stored content. Search on iPhone does much more than locate apps. Spotlight can search through information stored across the device, while Siri can draw on indexed content when handling requests. Keeping that index up to date allows those features to return relevant information without the index itself being sent to Apple.
The process is particularly noticeable in iOS 27 because Apple now surfaces an “Optimizing Search and Siri” notice in Settings while the work is underway. Earlier iOS 27 beta builds used different wording before Apple changed the message during testing.

Is Optimizing Search and Siri stuck?
Seeing the message for several hours does not necessarily mean indexing is stuck. Apple explicitly says the process can take hours or days, particularly when a device contains a large amount of data.
Before troubleshooting, leave the iPhone connected to power and Wi-Fi for an extended period and allow it some idle time. If Search continues producing incomplete or unexpected results after indexing has had sufficient time to finish, Apple recommends first making sure the device is running the latest available software.
For anyone encountering the message immediately after installing iOS 27, however, it is generally an expected part of the update process rather than an error. You can keep using your iPhone normally while it completes.
