Apple put the iPhone 18 Pro’s A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture camera and longer battery life front and center this week, but some of the smaller changes are easy to miss among the headline upgrades.
One of the most interesting is the redesigned thermal system. Apple says the next-generation vapor chamber has three times more surface area than the previous generation, while A20 Pro uses packaging inspired by Apple silicon for Mac. The chip and memory arrangement allows heat to move more effectively into the vapor chamber, helping the phone sustain performance for longer.
The camera has several quieter upgrades too. Alongside the new 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and variable aperture, Apple has added customizable Pro controls for shutter speed, white balance and aperture, plus a histogram for monitoring exposure. As announced by Apple, the new camera system can also record 4K Dolby Vision HDR in Time-lapse mode.
There is more going on inside the camera
Photographic Styles now includes texture and grain controls, giving users another way to change the character of an image without relying on a conventional filter. Apple has also upgraded Audio Mix algorithms, including the ability to isolate music.
Another unusual addition is Apple Reference Image. In a new Reference mode, the Main camera can capture signed sensor data that is processed into a reference image designed to help verify whether a photograph has subsequently been edited. It is a niche feature, but one that could prove useful for journalism, documentation and other situations where image authenticity matters.
Charging has changed as well. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro can reach up to 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes with a compatible wired setup, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
The Dynamic Island is smaller
The Dynamic Island has been reduced in size, giving the display a little more uninterrupted space without Apple abandoning the interface entirely. It remains part of iOS 27 and continues to surface live activities and system information.
Apple has also changed what is happening beneath the surface with its C2 modem, updated wireless hardware and new battery designs. On eSIM-only models, Apple quotes up to 36 hours of video playback for iPhone 18 Pro and as much as 45 hours for iPhone 18 Pro Max.
