iPhone 18 Pro could charge significantly faster, iOS 27 code suggests

Apple may be preparing a meaningful charging upgrade for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with code discovered in iOS 27 suggesting the devices could support substantially higher charging rates than their predecessors.

According to information shared by X user pdfu, Apple’s thermal charging optimizer contains references suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro models can operate at a 2.20C charging rate, compared with 1.65C for the iPhone 17 generation. That represents an increase of around 33% when charging current is considered relative to battery capacity.

A higher C-rate does not translate directly into a specific wattage or guarantee that an iPhone will charge 33% faster from empty to full. Charging speeds vary throughout a charging session as temperature, battery level and other conditions change. However, if Apple is able to sustain the higher rate during fast charging, it could noticeably reduce the amount of time needed to replenish the battery.

The same code reportedly points to a 1.65C rate for Apple’s foldable iPhone, matching the iPhone 17 family rather than the faster rate indicated for the new Pro models.

There may be further charging improvements coming with Apple’s 2027 iPhones. The findings suggest the standard iPhone 18 could also move to 2.20C, while the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 may receive increases compared with their predecessors.

None of the figures have been confirmed by Apple, and references found in software before launch should be treated cautiously. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its ‘Surprise and shine’ event today, when the company should provide the first official details about the devices.
