Apple Music to make AI labels mandatory for music created with artificial intelligence

Apple Music is preparing to make its AI disclosure system mandatory, requiring record labels and distributors to identify music and other content where artificial intelligence has played a material role in its creation.

The change builds on AI Transparency Tags introduced earlier this year, which allow providers to disclose AI use across individual parts of a release, including the sound recording, composition, artwork and music video.

According to AppleInsider, Apple has now told content providers that the tags will be required whenever AI was used to create a material portion of submitted content. That includes tracks primarily generated through generative AI platforms.

The move represents a significant step beyond Apple’s original implementation. The metadata fields were introduced as a way for labels and distributors to report AI involvement, but Apple is now moving towards requiring that disclosure rather than leaving it entirely optional.

Apple’s own delivery specification separates AI use into different categories. A track can be marked when AI generated a material portion of the sound recording, while a composition disclosure can identify AI-generated lyrics or other compositional elements. Separate tags can also identify AI-generated artwork and visual elements in music videos.

Later this year, that information is also expected to become visible to listeners through new “Made With AI” labels in Apple Music, giving subscribers a clearer indication when generative technology has been substantially involved in the content they are streaming.

The distinction is important because Apple’s approach does not simply classify an entire release as AI-generated. The metadata can identify which part of a project involved AI, potentially distinguishing a traditionally recorded song with AI-generated artwork from a recording or composition substantially created using generative tools.

Apple Music has received a series of changes throughout 2026, including new listening and discovery features introduced alongside Apple’s software updates.

Apple has not given a specific date for when the listener-facing Made With AI labels will appear, beyond saying they are coming later this year.
