Apple’s foldable iPhone plans reportedly extend well beyond the first-generation model expected this year, with development of a second-generation iPhone Ultra already said to be well underway.
Apple is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, but the company is reportedly already testing its successor for release in 2027.
According to Bloomberg, the second-generation foldable is “already well into testing.”
Few details about the 2027 model have surfaced so far, although the report points to Apple introducing a new chip. The early testing suggests Apple is treating the foldable as the beginning of a long-term product line rather than a one-off addition to the iPhone family.
This year’s first-generation iPhone Ultra is expected to use a book-style folding design, creating a larger display when opened while remaining significantly more compact when folded.
Apple’s roadmap reportedly stretches into 2028, when an additional generation of the foldable is expected to introduce larger displays. The Apple Post has separately covered Apple’s reported plans for a larger foldable iPhone in 2028.
With successive generations already appearing in Apple’s reported roadmap, the foldable iPhone could quickly develop into a permanent premium tier alongside the traditional iPhone Pro lineup.
