Apple is reportedly preparing another MacBook Air upgrade for early 2027, with the company expected to bring its next-generation M6 chip to both the 13-inch and 15-inch models.
The update is among a sizeable collection of new Apple products now rumored to arrive between the end of this year and the opening months of 2027, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Rather than introducing another major redesign, the next MacBook Air is expected to focus primarily on Apple silicon. The M6 would succeed the M5 chip used in the current generation and bring Apple’s latest chip architecture to its most popular notebook lineup.
The move would also continue an increasingly broad rollout of M6 across the Mac. Apple has already introduced the chip in the latest Mac mini, while an M6-powered entry-level MacBook Pro and iMac are also expected to form part of the company’s upcoming hardware plans.
Apple’s M6 is manufactured using a 2-nanometer process, making it an important generational step for Apple silicon. Moving to the smaller process is expected to provide improvements to performance and power efficiency, two areas that are particularly important to the fanless MacBook Air.
The current MacBook Air design is therefore likely to remain familiar, with Apple instead using the M6 upgrade to improve performance, efficiency and Apple Intelligence workloads without substantially changing the notebook’s appearance.
Apple has been expanding the Mac lineup considerably in 2026, and The Apple Post recently reported on plans for an entirely new OLED MacBook that could eventually sit between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
If Apple’s current roadmap holds, the M6 MacBook Air should arrive in early 2027, giving customers who do not need a new Mac immediately another reason to wait before upgrading.
