M6 MacBook Pro tipped to bring major AI, CPU and efficiency upgrades this fall

Apple’s next 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip is expected to arrive this fall, bringing a significant jump in AI performance, CPU capability and power efficiency while retaining the current design.

According to 9to5Mac, the base M6 MacBook Pro is expected to use Apple’s newly announced M6 chip, which introduces a Dual 16-core Neural Engine alongside a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU.

The new Neural Engine can deliver up to twice the peak compute performance of previous generations, which should give the M6 MacBook Pro a noticeable boost for on-device AI workloads and features in macOS 27. Apple unveiled the M6 chip last week alongside the new Mac mini, with The Apple Post previously detailing the chip’s focus on faster local AI processing.

The M6 also increases the base chip to a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, up from 10 cores each on M5. The CPU introduces three different core types, with two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores designed to balance demanding workloads with lower-power everyday tasks.

Apple’s move to a 2nm manufacturing process could also improve battery life. The company has described M6 as delivering a major improvement in both performance and power efficiency, although final battery-life figures for the upcoming MacBook Pro have not yet been announced.

The new M6 MacBook Pro is expected to launch later this fall with a 14-inch display and the same overall industrial design as the current model. Apple has not yet announced an exact release date or pricing.
