Why did I receive an Emergency Alert on my iPhone?
Millions of iPhone users across the UK received an Emergency Alert today after the UK Government issued a nationwide warning over the very high risk of wildfires.
The notification was sent directly to compatible iPhones and Android devices using the UK’s Emergency Alerts system, which is designed to warn the public when there is an immediate risk to life. Today’s alert follows a prolonged spell of hot, dry weather that has left vegetation across much of the country extremely vulnerable to fire.
What did the Emergency Alert say?
The alert warned residents, landowners, and visitors not to carry out any activities that could start a wildfire.
The Government specifically advised against using disposable barbecues, fire pits, garden incinerators, or fireworks, warning that even a small flame could quickly develop into a major wildfire capable of threatening homes, businesses, and emergency responders.
People who see signs of a wildfire are being urged to call 999 immediately.
Why did my iPhone make a loud siren sound?
Emergency Alerts are designed to grab your attention, even if your iPhone is on Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb, or has the volume turned down.
When an alert is received, compatible iPhones display a full-screen message while playing a distinctive warning tone and vibrating continuously until the alert is acknowledged.
Unlike a normal text message, the alert is delivered using cell broadcast technology, allowing it to reach millions of devices almost instantly without needing your phone number.
What is the UK’s Emergency Alerts system?
The UK launched its Emergency Alerts system nationally in 2023 following years of development and a nationwide public test.
The system is reserved for serious incidents where urgent action could help protect lives, including severe weather, flooding, major fires, terrorist incidents, and other civil emergencies.
Emergency Alerts are sent only to people in affected areas and are free to receive.
Can I turn Emergency Alerts off on my iPhone?
Yes. iPhone users can choose whether to receive Government Alerts by opening Settings, selecting Notifications, and scrolling to the bottom of the page. See more here.
However, the UK Government recommends leaving Emergency Alerts enabled, as they are only used in situations where there is believed to be an immediate threat to life.
