Apple’s future M7 Ultra chip could support up to 1.5TB of unified memory, matching the highest RAM configuration offered on the 2019 Intel Mac Pro, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman said the M7 Ultra “is designed to support as much as 1.5 terabytes of memory,” around double the maximum capacity expected for the M5 Ultra. He added, however, that whether Apple actually ships a Mac with that amount of memory “will depend on the state of the industry.”
Memory chip shortages have become increasingly widespread in recent months, making the components more expensive and harder for manufacturers to source. As a result, Apple may choose to offer lower memory configurations even if the M7 Ultra is technically capable of supporting significantly more.
If Apple ultimately offers a 1.5TB configuration, it would match the maximum memory available in the 2019 Intel-based Mac Pro, while delivering the benefits of Apple’s unified memory architecture, where the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine all share the same pool of high-speed memory.
