New Apple Pencils reportedly in development, replaceable batteries could feature

Apple is reportedly working on new versions of the Apple Pencil, including an updated Apple Pencil with USB-C and a new Apple Pencil Pro, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The report claims both accessories are expected to launch in early 2027, alongside a refreshed iPad Pro lineup.

Gurman did not reveal what new features Apple could introduce with either model. However, upcoming European Union regulations requiring many portable electronic devices to feature user-replaceable batteries by 2027 could influence the design of future Apple Pencils if the accessories fall within the scope of the legislation.

Current Apple Pencil models are charged internally rather than using replaceable batteries. The second-generation Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro charge wirelessly when magnetically attached to the side of compatible iPads, while the Apple Pencil with USB-C charges by connecting a USB-C cable hidden beneath a sliding cap.

If Apple is required to comply with the new regulations, it may need to redesign how future Apple Pencils are powered, although there is currently no indication from Gurman’s report that replaceable batteries are planned.
