Apple is reportedly planning to launch a second-generation iPhone Air next year, with the device expected to feature a dual-camera system for the first time.
According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is developing an updated iPhone Air for release in spring 2027 as the company looks to strengthen the appeal of its ultra-thin iPhone lineup. People familiar with the matter say the new model is currently in advanced testing inside Apple.
The iPhone Air debuted alongside the iPhone 17 lineup last year, introducing Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever. Measuring just 5.6mm thick, the device features a titanium frame, second-generation Ceramic Shield, and a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display.
While the slim design was one of the device’s biggest selling points, the iPhone Air arrived with some compromises compared to the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro models. These included a single rear camera and a smaller battery, both of which were necessary to achieve the thinner form factor.
Reports shortly after launch suggested Apple had reduced production of the iPhone Air to what were described as “end-of-production levels,” leading to speculation that the model was not performing as strongly as expected. Analysts have suggested the lack of a second camera may have discouraged some customers, particularly given the device’s position between the standard and Pro iPhone models.
Bloomberg says current prototypes of the next-generation iPhone Air, internally codenamed V62, include a second rear camera dedicated to ultra-wide photography. The addition would bring the device more in line with the rest of Apple’s iPhone lineup while addressing one of the most common criticisms of the original model.
Previous rumours have claimed the new iPhone Air could feature a 48MP Fusion camera alongside a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, similar to the camera setup found on the standard iPhone 17.
