M5 MacBook Pro expected soon, M5 Pro and M5 Max models delayed

Rumors suggest that Apple is preparing to launch a new base-model M5 MacBook Pro soon. According to AppleInsider, sources familiar with the matter say the device — codenamed J704 — is nearing release.
As noted by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, most M4 MacBook Pro configurations remain widely available, with the exception of the base M4 model, which is back-ordered until later this month. This could indicate Apple is clearing inventory ahead of the M5 refresh.
AppleInsider also reports that Apple has been testing the base M5 MacBook Pro with a hardware-focused version of macOS Tahoe 26.0.2. While additional M5-powered Mac models are in development, they are not expected to launch imminently.
Specifically, higher-end MacBook Pro models — codenamed J714 and J716, likely representing the M5 Pro and M5 Max versions — are expected to ship with macOS 26.3. For reference, macOS 15.3 was released publicly in January 2025, suggesting that macOS 26.3, and the corresponding high-end MacBook Pros, are likely to debut in early 2026.
