New AirTag ‘nearly ready’ to launch

Apple’s second-generation AirTag is “nearly ready,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who reports that the new device—slated to feature an improved Ultra Wideband chip for up to 3× longer tracking range compared to the current AirTag—could launch in the near future.
Writing in his weekly Power On newsletter on the eve of WWDC25, Gurman said “it doesn’t make much sense to debut [it] at WWDC,” although a launch tomorrow isn’t completely out of the question.
“The new AirTag is nearly ready, having been prepared for launch over the past several months, but I’d hardly consider that notable and it doesn’t make much sense to debut at WWDC,” Gurman wrote.
Gurman has previously claimed that the upgraded Ultra Wideband chip in the new AirTag is expected to extend Precision Finding capabilities from the current 10–30 meters to potentially three times that range, allowing users to locate their belongings more accurately over longer distances.

Design-wise, the new AirTag is expected to maintain its compact, button-style form factor and continue using a replaceable CR2032 battery. However, the internal speaker is rumored to be upgraded, making it louder and easier to hear in noisy environments.
