Over 10 billion apps downloaded from the App Store in 2024, Apple says

Apple says iOS users downloaded over 10 billion apps in 2024, as the App Store’s U.S. ecosystem ballooned to $406 billion in billings and sales—nearly triple the $142 billion recorded in 2019—according to a new study by Professor Andrey Fradkin (Boston University) and Dr. Jessica Burley (Analysis Group).
The report finds that in 2024 the App Store’s U.S. business comprised $277 billion from physical goods and services, $75 billion from in-app advertising, and $53 billion from digital goods and services. This mix underscores how the platform continues to serve as both a marketplace for tangible products and a vital channel for developers’ digital offerings.
Apps from U.S. developers were downloaded 12.4 billion times worldwide in 2024—up 36 percent since 2019—and their earnings more than doubled over that period. Nine of the App Store’s ten most-downloaded titles in the U.S. were created by American developers, and small developers who were active in 2021 saw their total App Store earnings jump 76 percent by 2024.
Apple noted a similar milestone in December, reporting that U.K. developers have earned nearly £9 billion from digital goods and services since the App Store’s 2008 launch.
