Apple Pay Express Mode now supported in New South Wales, Australia

Apple Pay Express Mode, which allows users to pay for their journey on public transport systems by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch above a card reader, without authenticating a payment using Face ID or Touch ID, has expanded to commuters using the Opal network in New South Wales, Australia.

Beginning today, Transport for NSW has made Apple Pay Express Mode available across the 25,000 card readers on the Opal network, including those for ferries and light rail, train stations, and thousands on the Opal on bus system.

“Commuters in the Hunter, Illawarra, Blue Mountains and everywhere in between will benefit from being the first public transport users in Australia to benefit from the mass roll out of this initiative,”” said NSW transport minister Jo Haylen. “It will make life so much easier for the almost two million transport passengers who use contactless payments with a digital wallet in NSW.”

In the event that a commuter’s iPhone battery dies mid-journey, with Apple Pay Express Mode, a commuter’s device can be used for up to five hour safter the red low battery icon has started to appear on the screen.

“It will make life so much easier for the almost 2 million transport passengers who use contactless payments with a digital wallet in NSW,” said Haylen.
