Blue verification checkmarks coming to Gmail with latest update

Google’s email service, Gmail, is adding new blue verification checkmarks to emails sent from verified organizations in an effort to identify messages from legitimate senders versus impersonators.

The verification checkmarks will be shown on emails sent from organizations who have enabled Brand Indicators for Message Identification (BIMI) in Gmail, which requires Google Workspace admins to authenticate that the brand logo they’re using as their email avatar is belongs to them.

Similar to Twitter, once a user hovers over the blue checkmark next to a sender’s name in Gmail, a popup will read “the sender of this email has verified” that they own the domain and logo in the profile image.

“Strong email authentication helps users and email security systems identify and stop spam, and also enables senders to leverage their brand trust,” Google wrote in a blog post. “This increases confidence in email sources and gives readers an immersive experience, creating a better email ecosystem for everyone.”

Blue verification checkmarks are being added to Gmail beginning today, to both Workspace accounts and personal Google accounts.
