As we near WWDC next month where Apple will announce iOS 16, iPadOS 16, the next macOS update, watchOS 9, tvOS 16, and more, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has said he expects this year’s watchOS 9 to be a “significant” update for the Apple Watch in this week’s latest edition of the Power On newsletter.
“While I don’t expect Apple to present a full redesign of the software, there should be major changes across the system, new ways of interacting and some fresh Apple apps,” says Gurman, referring to iOS 16. “The news about watchOS 9 will be significant as well.”
Neither Gurman nor the general rumor mill has shared any predictions for what Apple may include with watchOS 9 although it doesn’t seem too far fetched to imagine the update will bring more workout types, improved activity and health tracking, plus some fresh new watch faces.
WWDC will be held from June 6 through June 10, with this year being a digital and in-person hybrid, offering a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the main WWDC keynote and State of the Union videos together, along with the online community.
Last year’s watchOS update was rather lacklustre, with watchOS 8 bringing a new Mindfulness app, two new workout types, new Do Not Disturb settings and Apple’s Find Items app for AirTag and items in the Find My network.
