Apple to make ‘significant contribution’ to UK’s ‘Big Night In’ appeal, says Tim Cook

Apple CEO Tim Cook made a surprise appearance on the UK’s “Big Night In” TV fundraiser this evening, announcing that Apple will make a “significant contribution” to the charitable appeal, as well as waiving all royalties for the special “Times Like These” single created to raise money for the benefit.

The “Big Night In” combines two of the UK’s largest TV fundraisers into one, supporting Comic Relief and Children in Need.

Appearing in a pre-recorded video played after the “Times Like These” single was aired, Tim Cook said Apple is helping customers across the UK to join in by donating through their devices.

Tonight, I’m proud to announce that Apple will be waiving all royalties on the amazing single you just heard. We’re also making a significant donation of our own to the Big Night In, and helping our customers across the UK join in by contributing from their devices. We’re deeply inspired, not only by the strength and good humour of the British people, but also your empathy for one another and the neighbours beyond your shores. From our Apple family to yours, thank you for your generosity and your courage. Stay safe and stay well.

Customers can donate to the fundraiser by visiting Apple.com/uk and clicking the link which opens the Music app. The iTunes Store app on iOS also encourages donations, with the option to purchase the “Times Like These” single, or stream on Apple Music.

Tim Cook most recently appeared via FaceTime on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Cook revealed Apple was donating $10 million to ‘One World: Together at Home’ benefit.

Thanks for the tip-off, Adam!
