Apple to launch over-ear headphones at WWDC, new ‘AirPods X’ coming later in the year

Apple is planning on launching its long-rumored over-ear headphones at WWDC in June, with new “AirPods X” coming later in the year, according to YouTuber Jon Prosser who has put forward a flurry of Apple-related rumors over the past week.

Prosser claims Apple’s new Beats-style over-ear headphones, said to use the internal codename B515, will be priced around $350, competing with the likes of the stylish new Bose 700 headphones.

Additionally, Prosser suggests Apple will unveil new “AirPods X” later in the year, saying these new earphones are likely the “AirPods Pro Lite” that has previously been rumored by Taiwan-based supply chain publication DigiTimes.

The new “AirPods X”, allegedly going by the internal codename of B517, will be priced at around $200, which are targeted at the sports market.

Prosser hints that Apple’s goal is to eventually phase out Beats, the company it bought in 2014. Apple has continued to regularly update the Beats line, with it most recently introducing new, more affordable Powerbeats in March.

If the claims are accurate, we will likely see Apple continue to release new Apple earphones and headphones over the coming years, until the point where Apple’s own-branded products can comfortably overtake the current offerings by Beats.
